[WT논평] Science is used as a means to push ideological agendas

The rise in the dominance of financial and commercial interests sponsoring science on one hand, and an increasingly ideological agenda of government-funded research on the other hand, are thwarting and clouding science’s role to promote insight, innovation and progress.

Decline and loss of credibility is the natural consequence when science is used as a means to advance corporate interests or to push ideological agendas. Without a change in course, this decline will endanger American scientific leadership.

In 2005, Stanford professor Paul Ioannidis published a now-famous paper, which argued that most research findings are false. The greater the financial interests in a scientific field, the less likely the research findings are to be true.

Furthermore, review groups like Cochrane can only review published research. So if there is nothing but biased research published, the meta-analysis will be biased as well.

Whenever there is heavy financial interest in a certain outcome, biased results, fraud and corruption must be expected. “Since funders get to review the proposed research methods and specify the process and exclusion criteria prior to granting funds, the results will be stacked in the funder’s favor.”

Science must restore its credibility. To that end, its very transparency has to be substantially increased. The public must know about funders’ financial benefits resulting from sponsored research and must scrutinize results that follow ideological agendas.

We as a society must find ways to finance science on a neutral basis without a narrow financial or ideological agenda concerning the outcome in order to restore its credibility and create true progress.

이념적인 목적에 악용되는 과학

한 쪽에서는 과학을 후원하는 재정 및 상업 이익단체들의 지배력 상승과 다른 쪽에서는 정부의 자금 지원을 받는 연구의 증가하는 이념적 의도가 통찰력과 기술혁신 및 발전을 촉진하는 과학의 역할을 흐리게 하여 좌절시키고 있다.

과학이 기업의 이익을 조장하거나 이념적 의도를 강조하는 수단으로 이용될 때 신뢰성의 하락과 상실은 자연적인 결과다. 진로 변경이 없을 경우 이런 하락이 과학계에서 미국의 지도적 입지를 위협할 것이다.

스탠퍼드대학교의 폴 아이오애니디스 교수는 2005년에 논문을 한 편 발표하여 지금은 유명해졌는데 이 논문은 대다수 연구의 발견이 허위라고 주장했다. 과학 분야에서 재정적인 이해관계가 커질수록 연구의 발견이 진실일 가능성은 줄어든다.

뿐만 아니라 코크란 같은 비평 단체들은 단지 발표된 연구만을 검토할 수 있다. 따라서 오로지 편향된 연구만 발표될 경우 메타분석 또한 편향될 것이다.

특정한 결과에 따르는 재정적 이해관계가 클 경우에는 항상 각종 편향된 결과와 사기 및 부패를 예상해야 한다. “자금 제공자들이 자금 승인에 앞서 제안된 연구 방법을 검토하고 연구 과정 및 제외 기준을 명시하게 되므로 자금 제공자들에게 유리한 결과가 축적될 것이다.”

과학은 신뢰를 회복해야 한다. 그런 목적에서 과학 자체의 투명성이 대폭 증대되어야 한다. 국민들은 후원한 연구 결과에 따르는 자금 제공자들의 이익을 이해하고 이념적인 의도를 추종하는 각종 연구 결과를 면밀히 검토해야 한다.

과학의 신뢰성을 회복하고 진정한 발전을 창출하기 위해서 우리 사회는 결과와 관련된 좁은 재정적 혹은 이념적 의도가 없는 중립적인 기반 위에서 과학에 자금을 제공하는 방법을 찾아야 한다.
