[WT논평] “Political correctness” has nothing to do with what is correct

On university campuses and in the mainstream media we now have a growing body of rules, both written and tacit, mandating that only “politically correct” views be expressed.

I maintain that “political correctness” has as much to do with what is correct -i.e. true -as “ethnic cleansing” has to do with personal hygiene.

What does it have to do with instead· Orthodoxy -a word that comes the Greek orthos, meaning right, and doxa, meaning opinions. Those enforcing what they deem “right opinions” (or orthodoxy or political correctness) have become the new Establishment.

Actually, the new orthodoxy is not so very new. In The New York Times 26 years ago, journalist and author Richard Bernstein noted that the term had for some years been in use to communicate “a kind of ‘correct’ attitude toward the problems of the world. …The view that Western civilization is inherently unfair to minorities, women and homosexuals has been at the center of politically correct thinking on campuses.”

The news in his story was that political correctness was becoming “a sarcastic jibe used by those, conservatives and classical liberals alike, to describe what they see as a growing intolerance, a closing of debate, a pressure to conform to a radical program or risk being accused of a commonly reiterated trio of thought crimes: sexism, racism and homophobia.”

“It’s a manifestation of what some are calling liberal fascism,” Roger Kimball, author of “Tenured Radicals,” a critique of the politicization of the humanities, told Mr. Bernstein. “Under the name of pluralism and freedom of speech, it is an attempt to enforce a narrow and ideologically motivated view.”

대학교 교정과 주류 언론에서 우리는 지금 늘어나는 다수 규칙에 직면해 있으며 명문화되었거나 혹은 암묵적인 이 규칙들은 오직 “정치적으로 공정한” 견해만 표현하도록 명령한다.

“인종 청소”가 개인위생과 무관한 것처럼 “정치적 공정성”이 올바른 것 즉 진실과 무관하다고 필자는 주장한다.

대신에 그것은 무엇과 관계가 있는가. 정설이나 통설을 의미하는 orthodoxy란 단어와 관련이 있는데 이 단어는 옳음을 의미하는 그리스 단어 orthos와 견해를 의미하는 doxa에서 유래한다. 자기네가 “올바른 견해” 혹은 정설이나 정치적 공정성이라고 여기는 것을 남에게 강요하는 사람들이 새로운 기득권층이 되었다.

이 새로운 정설은 사실 그다지 매우 새로운 것이 아니다. 26년 전 뉴욕타임스에 기고한 글에서 언론인 겸 작가인 리처드 번스타인은 이 용어가 “세상의 각종 문제에 대한 일종의 ‘공정한’ 태도를 전달하기 위해서” 몇 년 동안 사용되어 왔다고 지적했다. “서방 문명이 본질적으로 소수집단들과 여성들 및 동성애자들에게 불공정하다는 이 견해가 대학 교정의 정치적으로 공정한 사고의 중심이다.”

정치적 공정성이, 보수주의자들과 고전적인 진보주의자들 모두가 사용한 “비꼬는 모욕적 언사”가 되고 있다는 사실이 그의 이야기 속에 담긴 뉴스다. 그들은 증가하는 불관용과 토론의 봉쇄 및 급진적 계획 혹은 흔히 3대 사상 범죄로 거듭 언급되는 성차별주의, 인종차별주의, 동성애 혐오로 비난받을 위험부담에 순응하라는 압력으로 그들이 간주하는 현상을 설명하기 위해서 이 용어를 사용했다.

인문학의 정치화를 비판한 “종신직 급진파”의 저자인 로저 킴볼은 번스타인에게 이렇게 말했다. “그것은 일부 사람들이 진보적 전체주의라고 부르는 것의 발현이다. 즉 다원주의와 언론의 자유라는 명분 아래 협소하고 이념적 동기를 지닌 견해를 강요하려는 시도다.”
