[WT논평] American victimhood is the luxury of an affluent society

The Greeks gave us tragedy - the idea that life is never fair. Terrible stuff for no reason tragically falls on good people. Life’s choices are sometimes only between the bad and the far worse. The tragic hero refuses to blame the gods for his terrible fate. Instead, a Prometheus or Oedipus prefers to fight against the odds.

In contrast, modern Americans have given the world therapy. Life must always be fair. If not, something or someone must be blamed. All good people deserve only a good life.

A nation of victims soon becomes collectively paralyzed in fear of offending someone. Pay down the $20 trillion debt? Reform the unsustainable Social Security system? Ask the 47 percent of the population that pays no income tax to at least pay some?

Nope. Victims would allege that such belt-tightening is unfair and impossible - and hurtful to boot. So we do nothing as the rendezvous with financial collapse gets ever closer.

American victimhood is the luxury of an affluent, secure and leisured postmodern society that can afford such silly indulgences.

Once victimhood is established, we lose our identities and, as part of an offended collective, claim blanket exemption for all our imperfections.

Sometimes the art of victimhood gets confusing. If we are all victims of some sort, who are left to be the victimizers?

Unfortunately, Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Islamic State and the Chinese have no particular sympathy for any American who lays claim to victim status.

A nuclear bomb from North Korea or Iran will not sort us all out by race, class or gender, much less by victim and victimizer.

그리스인들은 우리에게 비극 즉 인생은 결코 공정하지 않다는 생각을 남겼다. 이유 없는 참혹한 일이 선량한 사람들에게 비극적으로 일어난다. 인생의 여러 가지 선택은 단지 나쁜 것과 훨씬 더 나쁜 것 사이의 선택일 경우가 종종 있다. 비극의 주인공은 자신의 참혹한 운명을 신들의 탓으로 돌리기를 거부한다. 대신 프로메테우스와 오이디푸스는 역경에 맞서 싸우는 편을 택한다.

그에 반해 현대 미국인들은 세상 사람들에게 치유법을 제공했다. 인생은 언제나 공정해야 한다. 그렇지 않을 경우 무엇인가 혹은 누군가 책임을 져야 한다. 모든 선량한 사람들은 오로지 좋은 인생을 살 자격이 있다.

피해자들의 나라는 오래지 않아 누군가 기분을 상하지 않을까 하는 두려움에 빠져 집단 마비를 일으킨다. 20조달러의 국가 부채를 상환해야 하는가. 유지가 불가능한 사회보장제도를 개혁해야 하는가. 소득세를 내지 않는 인구의 47%에게 최소한 약간이라도 내라고 요구해야 하는가.

아니다. 피해자들은 그런 허리띠 졸라매기가 불공정하고 게다가 고통을 준다고 주장할 것이다. 그리하여 점점 더 가까이 다가오는 재정 붕괴에 직면할 때까지 우리는 아무것도 하지 않는다.

미국인들의 피해의식은 풍요롭고 안전하며 여유로워 그런 방종을 어리석게 받아줄 여유가 있는 포스트모던 사회의 사치다.

일단 피해의식이 자리를 잡으면 우리는 자신의 각종 정체성을 상실하고, 기분을 상한 집단의 일부로서 우리의 모든 불완전함에 대한 전반적인 용서를 요구한다.

피해의식의 기술은 때때로 혼란에 빠지기도 한다. 만약 우리 모두가 어떤 종류의 피해자일 경우 누가 남아 가해자가 되는가.

불행히도 러시아 대통령 블라디미르 푸틴과 이슬람국가 및 중국인들은, 피해자 지위를 주장하는 미국인들에게 별 동정심을 느끼지 않는다.

북한이나 이란에서 날아오는 핵폭탄은, 우리 모두를 피해자와 가해자는 고사하고 인종과 계급 및 성에 따라 구분하지 않을 것이다.
