[WT논평] Life has not changed all that much

In today’s technically sophisticated and globally connected world, we assume life has been completely reinvented. In truth, it has not changed all that much.

Facebook and Google may have recalibrated our lifestyles, but human nature, geography and culture are nearly timeless. Even as ideologies and governments come and go, the same old problems and challenges remain.

Compare what dominated the news in 1966, 51 years ago. The Middle East in 1966 was going up in flames, just as it is today ? and in many of the same places.

Moscow clamped down on dissidents and opposed almost all U.S. initiatives abroad.

Nothing has much changed elsewhere in the world, either. The dispute between India and Pakistan is ongoing since the outright war in 1965. There were also the sorts of rifts within NATO that have become so familiar.

Nor were things that different at home than they are today. Pop hits today do not sound all that much different from those that swept America in 1966. Even fashion tastes come full circle.

We often worry that 2016 America has become a violent society, with unprecedented mass killings at schools and universities. But unfortunately, nothing much has changed here, either.

America and the rest of the world have made enormous progress in technology, science and social relations. But beneath the veneer of 2016, human nature remains the same, and life often operates on principles similar to those from a half-century ago ? and even before that.

That persistent continuity of the human experience is why studying history remains about the only way to understand who we were, are and will be.

기술적으로 고도화되고 세계적으로 연결된 오늘의 세상에서 우리는 삶이 완전히 재창조되었다고 생각한다. 사실 우리의 삶은 그렇게 많이 변화하지 않았다.

페이스북과 구글이 각종 생활양식을 재보정했을지 모르나 인간의 천성과 지리 및 문화는 세월이 흘러도 거의 변함이 없다. 여러 이념과 정부가 오고 가지만 동일한 해묵은 문제들과 과제들이 여전히 존재한다.

51년 전의 뉴스 주류를 비교해 보라. 1966년에 중동은 타오르고 있었다. 오늘날과 꼭 마찬가지다. 그리고 여러 동일한 지역의 다수가 그렇다.

모스크바는 반체제인사들을 탄압했고 미국이 주도하는 외교정책의 거의 대부분에 반대했다.

세계의 여타 지역에서 역시 많이 변한 것이 없다. 인도와 파키스탄 사이의 분쟁은 1965년의 전면적인 전쟁 이후 계속되고 있다. 아주 낯이 익은 유형의 각종 균열도 나토 내부에 존재했다.

당시의 국내 사정 또한 오늘과 다른 것이 없다. 오늘날 유행하는 대중음악은 1966년 미국을 휩쓸었던 음악과 소리가 그렇게 많이 다르지 않다. 패션조차도 다시 원점으로 돌아온다.

우리는 여러 학교와 대학교에서 전례 없는 대규모 살인이 저질러진 2016년의 미국이 폭력적인 사회로 변했다고 종종 걱정한다. 그러나 불행히도 여기서도 많이 변화한 것은 역시 없다.

미국과 여타 세계는 기술과 과학 및 사회관계 면에서 엄청난 발전을 이룩했다. 그러나 2016년의 겉모습 아래는 여전히 동일한 인간의 천성이 존재하고 삶은 반세기 전과 심지어 그보다 더 오래된 것과 비슷한 각종 원칙에 따라 작동되는 경우가 흔하다.

인류의 현재와 미래를 이해하는 거의 유일한 길이 역사인 이유가 그러한 인간체험의 항구적 연속성에 있다.
