[WT논평] A mythology about the Arab-Israeli conflict

A powerful false narrative has been created regarding the Palestinian conflict with Israel. Accepted as truth, it forms the basis of political dialogue and provides justification for decisions made by the U.N., the EU and individual nation-states.

This involves false narratives, stories and legends not based on fact but masquerading as truth. This ahistorical view posits Israelis as colonialist oppressors and Palestinians as their innocent victims in order to generate support for the Palestinian cause, demonize the world’s only Jewish state and delegitimize Israel’s right to exist, similar to the Nazis’ successful demonization and delegitimization of Jews.

Here are the principal false narratives. Jews are colonialists in the Middle East with neither historical nor religious connection to the area. Palestinians are the indigenous people of Israel and the rightful occupants of Judea/Samaria (aka West Bank). Israel is a brutal occupier of Palestinian land.

“Israelis are occupiers” and “Palestinians are victims” are metaphors that ignite passions with visceral impact just as the “Jew is a parasite” did for the Nazis. They shape the way decision-makers view Israelis and Palestinians, framing the discussion and creating the perception that Israel is the main obstacle to peace. Israel, therefore, must make significant concessions to ensure a resolution of the conflict while Palestinians are held blameless, their Jew-hatred ignored and their actions rationalized and excused. They face no demands for compromise.

This mythology of fables and lies provides the justification for efforts to sanction Israel, undermine her negotiating position and force the Jewish state to compromise its security and ultimately jeopardize its survival.

이스라엘에 관한 허위주장의 목적

팔레스타인과 이스라엘의 충돌과 관련하여 강력한 허위 설명이 만들어졌다. 이것이 진실로 받아들여져 정치적인 대화의 바탕을 이루고 유엔, 유럽연합, 개별 국가들이 내리는 각종 결정에 정당성을 제공한다.

여기에는 사실에 바탕을 두지 않았으나 진실로 위장한 허위 설명, 이야기, 전설이 수반된다. 이런 반역사적인 견해는 팔레스타인 측 명분에 대한 지지를 이끌어내고 나치의 성공적인 유대인 악마취급 및 비합법화와 비슷하게 세계 유일의 유대인 국가를 악마취급하며 이스라엘의 생존 권리를 비합법화하기 위해서 이스라엘 사람들을 식민주의 압제자로, 팔레스타인 사람들을 무고한 희생자로 상정한다.

주요한 허위 설명은 다음과 같다. 유대인들은 지역과 역사적으로나 종교적으로 아무 관계가 없는 중동의 식민주의자들이다. 팔레스타인 사람들은 이스라엘의 토착 주민이며 요르단 강 서안 즉 유대·사마리아의 합법적인 입주자들이다. 이스라엘은 팔레스타인 땅의 악랄한 점령자이다.

“이스라엘인들은 점령자”이고 “팔레스타인 사람들은 희생자”란 발언은 “유대인은 기생충이다”란 발언이 나치에게 그랬던 것과 꼭 같이 감정적으로 강력한 영향을 주는 분노에 불을 붙이는 은유다. 그런 발언은 의사 결정자들이 이스라엘인들 및 팔레스타인 사람들을 보는 방식의 모양을 만들고 논의의 틀을 정하며 이스라엘이 평화의 주된 장애라는 인식을 만들어낸다. 그러므로 분쟁 해결을 보장하기 위해서 이스라엘은 중요한 양보를 해야 하는 한편 팔레스타인 사람들은 떳떳하여 책임이 없고 그들의 유대인 증오는 무시되며 그들의 각종 행동은 합리화되고 양해된다. 그들은 각종 타협 요구에 직면하지 않는다.

이런 우화 및 거짓말의 신화는 이스라엘을 제재하고 이스라엘의 협상 입지를 약화시키며 유대 국가의 안보를 손상시키도록 강요하여 궁극적으로 생존을 위험에 빠뜨리는 노력을 정당화해 준다.
