[WT논평] Why anti-pesticide campaigns do unintended harm

While pesticides have risks that must be managed, they also provide important benefits to farmers, gardeners and consumers. These benefits are being lost in a politically correct sea of regulations and blind support for everything “organic.”

News stories have begun to highlight just some of the problems associated with a foolhardy fear of pesticides. Let’s start with a very unfavorable thing: black-widow spiders are increasingly finding a home among organically grown grapes.

In the early 2000s, Britons began finding these visitors on their grapes, thanks to a grower in the United Kingdom who decided that spiders were a good alternative to pesticides to control fruit-devouring bugs.

Here in the United States, a shopper was appalled to find one of these surly creatures nesting inside her bag of grapes. The spiders are even showing up on non-organic grapes as growers try to reduce pesticide use because of bad public relations created by groups such as the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

EWG publishes an annual report demonizing healthy fruits and vegetables that contain traces of pesticide residue. The report places grapes, along with apples, peaches, blueberries and other superhealthy foods on a “dirty dozen” list simply because they contain a tiny bit more pesticide residue than do other foods such as onions.

Even though growing fruits may require more pesticides than growing onions, the levels are legal and too low to matter healthwise. In fact, both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration have pointed out that these foods are safe and healthy to eat.

Farmers and gardeners use Neonicotinoids to protect a wide range of plants from grains to fruits and vegetables to ornamental roses. Neonicotinoids can be applied to seeds, which eventually produces plants that systemically can fight off pests without the need for regular spraying.

“Greens” claim these products are responsible for the mysterious disappearance of honeybee colonies. But this problem existed before farmers began using these chemicals, and evidence is weak that Neonicotinoids have a significant effect in real-life settings.

The “greens” unscientific attack on Neonicotinoids is the tip of the iceberg. They have pushed for bans on a host of pesticide products, including chemicals needed to fight disease-carrying vectors. These anti-pesticide policies mean more people may suffer from disabling and sometimes deadly insect-transmitted diseases.

살충제에는 관리해야 할 위험요인이 있지만 또한 농부, 원예가, 소비자에게 중요한 여러 가지 혜택도 제공한다. 정치적으로 정당한 규제의 바다와 모든 “유기농” 농산물에 대한 맹목적인 지지 속에서 이런 혜택은 외면당한다.

여러 가지 살충제에 대한 미욱한 공포와 관련된 문제들 가운데 단지 일부를 뉴스 기사들이 강조하기 시작했다. 유기농 포도 속에 둥지를 트는 검은 과부 거미들이 발견되는 사례가 증가하고 있는, 매우 불운한 현상부터 시작하자.

2000년대 초에 영국인들은 이 방문객들을 자기네 포도에서 발견하기 시작했는데 이는 열매를 먹는 벌레들을 다스리는 살충제의 훌륭한 대안이 거미라고 생각한 영국의 한 포도 재배업자 덕분이다.

미국에서는 한 쇼핑객이 이 성미 고약한 벌레 한 마리가 포도 봉투 안에 도사리고 있는 것을 발견하고 기겁을 했다. 이 거미들은 비유기농 포도에서도 나타나고 있다. 왜냐하면 환경실무그룹 같은 단체들이 벌이는 악성 홍보로 인해서 재배업자들이 살충제 사용을 줄이려고 노력하기 때문이다.

환경실무그룹은 미량의 살충제가 남아 있는, 건강에 좋은 과일 및 채소를 불량식품으로 몰아붙이는 연례보고서를 발표한다. 보고서는 단지 양파 같은 다른 식품들보다 약간 더 많은 살충제 잔유물을 내포했다는 이유로 사과, 복숭아, 블루베리, 여타 건강에 고도로 좋은 식품과 더불어 포도를 “더러운 12가지” 식품 목록에 올린다.

과일 재배에는 양파 재배보다 더 많은 살충제가 필요할 가능성이 있으나 그 수준은 합법적이며 너무 낮아 건강에 문제가 되지 않는다. 실제로 미국 환경보호국과 식품의약국은 이런 식품류가 안전하며 먹어서 건강에 좋다고 지적했다.

농부들과 원예가들은 곡물부터 과일 및 채소와 장식용 장미에 이르는 광범한 식물들을 보호하기 위해 네오니코티노이드를 사용한다. 이 살충제로 씨앗도 처리 가능한데 이런 처리를 통해서 규칙적인 살충제 살포를 할 필요 없이 해충들을 체계적으로 퇴치하는 것이 가능한 여러 식물을 나중에 만들어낸다.

“녹색운동가들”은 이런 농산물이 꿀벌 무리의 원인 모를 실종에 책임이 있다고 주장한다. 그러나 농부들이 이런 화학물질을 사용하기 시작하기 이전부터 이 문제가 존재했고 네오니코티노이드가 실제 환경에 현저한 영향을 미친다는 주장을 뒷받침하는 증거는 약하다.

“녹색운동가들”이 이 살충제를 비과학적으로 공격하는 것은 빙산의 일각이다. 그들은 질병을 옮기는 매개체들과 싸우는 데 필요한 각종 화학물질을 포함한 다수의 살충제 제품들에 대한 금지를 추진하고 있다. 이런 살충제 반대 정책은 사람들을 불구로 만들고 때로는 생명을 앗아가는, 곤충이 전염시키는 각종 질병에 더 많은 사람들이 시달리도록 만드는 것을 의미할 수 있다.
