[WT논평] The Gospel according to PETA

One area where left-wing activists are trying to influence minds is through the animal rights/animal liberation movement. The Bible is quite clear that man has dominion over animals and can use animals to his benefit.

Animal activists once argued traditional thought should be battled. Peter Singer, the godfather of the animal liberation movement, has remarked, “I think in the end we have, reluctantly, to recognize that the religious tradition is our foe.” But rather than fight a frontal assault, contemporary animal rights activists are using religious language to undermine the very concept of dominion.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which wants to ban meat, dairy, eggs, and other animal products, has a long-running campaign claiming that Jesus was a vegetarian. The Humane Society of the United States (a national group not related to your local pet shelter) has also founded its own internal religion department and formed a religious advisory committee drawing everyone from a conservative evangelical Liberty University professor to liberal spiritualist Marianne Williamson.

HSUS’s goals are the same as PETA’s, and its tactics are similar. HSUS encourages Christians to “eat mercifully” and to show “compassion” in their food choices. Like PETA, however, this translates into not eating animal products at all.

Jewish festivals involve meat and Jesus fed the multitudes with fish, so the idea that Jesus was a vegetarian or would mandate that we all become vegans is obviously false. But the facts don’t matter to these people. Their end goal does, and if that requires historical revisionism and repackaging of messages in Christian language, then so be it. PETA is pushing for a revision to the Bible so that animals are referred to as “he/she” instead of “it.”

Other times, it’s more subtle. HSUS targets children with animations of animals and a magazine that it pushes on school kids. It also has a series of lesson plans for schools, including a discussion of how to use George Orwell’s “Animal Farm” to attack meat production.

The ultimate consequence of conflating humans and animals can be seen in the words of Peter Singer, who has argued that Christianity is the enemy of animal liberation: “the life of a newborn is of less value than the life of a pig, a dog, or a chimpanzee.”

Fundamentally, we are not the same as animals. Religious thought flatly puts humans on a different moral plane than animals. But it’s a self-evident truth that the activists deny.

기독교와 동물해방 운동이 원수가 된 까닭

좌익 운동가들이 심리적 영향을 미치려고 애쓰는 영역의 하나가 동물권리 및 동물해방 운동이다. 인간이 모든 동물을 지배하고 자신의 이익을 위해 동물을 이용할 수 있다는 점을 성경은 아주 분명히 밝히고 있다.

동물운동가들은 전통적인 생각에 맞서 싸워야 한다고 과거에 주장했다. 동물해방운동의 대부인 피터 싱어는 이런 견해를 밝혔다. “유대·기독교의 종교적 전통이 우리의 적이란 점을 우리가 마지못해 결국 인정하게 되었다고 나는 생각한다.” 그러나 현대의 동물권리 운동가들은 정면 공격을 통해 싸우기보다는 지배권의 개념 자체를 약화시키기 위해 종교적 언어를 사용한다.

육류와 낙농제품, 달걀, 여타 동물 생산물의 금기를 원하는 ‘동물을 윤리적으로 대우하는 사람들’(PETA) 오래전부터 예수가 채식주의자였다고 주장하는 운동을 전개해 왔다. 독자가 사는 지역의 동물보호소와 관계가 없는 전국적 단체인 미국동물애호회(HSUS) 또한 자체적으로 국내 종교부를 설치하고 보수적인 복음주의파인 리버티 대학교 교수로부터 진보적인 강신론자인 매리앤 윌리엄슨까지 모든 사람을 끌어들인 종교 자문위원회를 구성했다.

이 단체의 목표는 페타와 같으며 전술도 유사하다. HSUS는 기독교인들에게 ‘자비로운 식사’를 장려하고 식품 선택 때 ‘동정심’을 보이라고 권장한다. 그러나 페타처럼 이것은 동물 생산물의 완전 금식 실천을 의미한다.

유대인들의 각종 축제 때 먹는 육류가 있고 예수는 군중에게 물고기를 먹였으므로 예수가 채식을 했다든가 혹은 우리 모두에게 엄격히 채식을 하도록 지시할 것이란 발상은 따라서 명백히 허위다. 그러나 이런 사람들에게는 사실이 중요한 것이 아니라 그들의 최종 목적이 중요하다. 만약 자기네 목적에 역사적 수정주의와 기독교 언어에 담긴 메시지의 재포장이 필요할 경우 그들은 서슴지 않고 그렇게 한다. 페타는 동물을 언급할 때 영어로 그것을 의미하는 ‘it’ 대신 ‘he/she’를 사용하도록 성경을 수정하라고 압력을 가한다.

다른 경우에는 더욱 교묘하다. HSUS는 아동들을 표적으로 삼는 동물 만화와 잡지를 만들어 학교 아동들에게 읽기를 강요한다. 그것은 또한 학교의 학습계획 시리즈를 만들었는데, 그 가운데는 육류 생산을 공격하기 위해 조지 오웰의 ‘동물동장’을 이용하는 방법을 논의한 내용이 포함되었다.

인간과 동물 혼동의 궁극적인 결과를 피터 싱어의 말 속에서 볼 수 있다. 기독교가 동물해방의 적이라고 주장해 온 그는 “신생아의 생명은 돼지나 개 혹은 침팬지의 생명보다 가치가 떨어진다” 고 말했다.

우리는 근본적으로 동물과 같지 않다. 종교적 사상은 인간을 동물과 완전히 다른 도덕적 차원에 분명하게 놓는다. 그러나 동물해방운동가들은 이런 자명한 진실을 부정한다.
