‘높이뛰기의 전설’ 포스베리 별세

육상 높이뛰기의 ‘전설’이자 ‘포스베리 플롭(배면뛰기)’의 창시자 딕 포스베리(미국)가 별세했다. 향년 76세.

세계육상연맹은 14일 “포스베리가 13일에 영면했다. 고인의 명복을 빈다. 포스베리는 높이뛰기의 새로운 세계를 연 전설적인 선수”라고 밝혔다.

포스베리는 1968년 멕시코시티 올림픽 남자 높이뛰기 결선에서 224의 올림픽 신기록이자, 당시 세계 2위 기록을 세우며 우승했다.

포스베리는 오리건 주립대에서 공학 박사 학위를 받았고, 은퇴 후 엔지니어로 일했다. 다시 스포츠계로 돌아온 그는 육상 코치, 미국 올림픽·패럴림픽 협회 부회장, 세계올림피언협회 회장으로 활동을 이어왔다.
